OPC or PPC: Which is the better Cement for House Construction In India?

Cement is widely used for construction of all kinds. Choosing the right kind of Cement for a specific construction is key though. In Housing Construction, two types of Cements are used. They are:

Original Portland Cement

The most commonly used Cement when it comes to house construction. It is produced using the chemical combination of calcium, silicon, aluminum, iron mostly. There are 3 different grades in OPC:

  1. 33 Grade
33 Grade is used in small house construction where the strength is not that much of a concern.
  2. 43 Grade
43 Grade is used in medium-scale construction like a 2-floor or 3-floor building. Here a medium strength is required to support upper storeys.
  3. 53 Grade
53 Grade is generally used in mass construction. It isn’t normally used in house construction. It is used specifically where a high strength of concrete is required.

Portland Pozzolana Cement:

This cement is becoming the go-to choice of the Builders & Construction Workers day by day as it provides better properties and applications as compared to OPC.

Made up of Pozzolanic Materials which constitutes 10 to 30% of the entire composition. The strength of this Cement is comparable to OPC 43 Grade Cement. There are no different grades in PPC as in OPC. It is used in house construction or rather preferred as it gives better results as well as performance over the longer period.

Key Takeaway:

PPC slightly beats the OPC in terms of properties.
OPC has lower setting time as compared to PPC which requires more setting time.
PPC offers more durability than OPC.
